It’s National Mammography Day – Here Are 3 Ways You Can Celebrate

Scary fact: 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer throughout their lifetime. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help fight the battle against breast cancer on National Mammography Day, and all throughout the year.

Originally introduced by President Clinton in 1993, the third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day. This year, in 2019, National Mammography Day is celebrated on October 18 – but the entire month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The goal of National Mammography Day is to encourage women to schedule their annual mammogram appointment; have you booked yours yet?

3 Ways to Celebrate National Mammography Day

1. Schedule a Mammogram

According to cancer.gov, 12.8% of women born in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Think about 8 of your closest female friends and relatives – one of them is likely to develop breast cancer at some point in time. This risk increases with age. It’s a scary fact to contend with, but you can help protect yourself by scheduling annual mammograms. An early diagnoses is the best way to successfully treat and beat breast cancer.

2. Support your local Breast Cancer Resource Center and Attend Art Bra Austin 2020

At Avenue Five Institute, many of us have been personally impacted by breast cancer – just like so many of you. Our experiences have prompted us to get more involved in the fight against this life-encompassing disease. Over the years, we have donated thousands of dollars and hours of community service in the name of breast cancer.

It is with a genuine spirit of love and caring that every year, our students and staff participate in Austin’s annual Art Bra Auction and Runway Show, organized by the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas. During this event, each bra tells a story while spreading awareness. Even better, all of the bras are auctioned off and the proceeds are donated to breast cancer patients, as well as funding research and awareness. 3. Donate Your Time & Services Helping Those Impacted by Breast Cancer

On National Mammography Day, and every day of the year, there are many things you can do to help support families impacted by breast cancer, even just by donating a few hours of your time. You could…

  • Offer to make a meal for a family who is dealing with breast cancer.
  • Drive someone to their doctors appointment.
  • Donate a certain number of hours this month (or every month) to providing a free service to women with breast cancer – massage therapy, skincare, hair styling, makeup, whatever you can. We all have unique talents to share.
  • Help clean up and do house chores for someone undergoing breast cancer treatments.

How do I connect with local cancer patients?

Reach out to local organizations who help cancer patients and let them know you’d like to donate your time and how you’d like to help. You could also share a post on Facebook expressing your desire to help, you never who you know that may know someone in need.

Need additional help finding the right place to donate your time, talents and resources? Reach out to us, or  the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas – we are more than happy to help!
