5 Questions to Ask Before Going to Beauty School

Making a big career change can be intimidating, but when you are pursing a passion no challenge is insurmountable.  Before you make the official decision to attend beauty school, here are some questions you should ask:

1. What Is the Time Commitment?

Before committing yourself to beauty college, you need to assess your lifestyle and desires for the long term.  If you’re looking for an ordinary 9-to-5 type of job, there is little chance you’ll find that with a career in beauty.  However if you’re more interested in flexible work schedules and earning more money directly correlating to the effort you put in, then a career in beauty might just be up your alley.

2. Is This Really My Passion?

Are you passionate about working with a team in a busy, varying, and exciting environment?  Do you working with clients to achieve that perfect look?  Do you sketch out ideas for new looks, and think about ways of changing up your own look?  Examine your values to see what makes your tick to see if this is really your passion.  Seek mentors in your desired field, ask lots of questions, and see if your values line up with theirs.

3. Can I Be Professional When Dealing With Gross Situations?

In this industry you’re going to have to deal with people from all walks of life, and with differing health situations.  Maybe you have a client that comes in for regular pedicures, but also has a gnarly toe fungus that wont go away.  Perhaps you have to give a facial to a client who has cold sores on their mouth.  Will you be able to handle these situations with professionalism, and still make your clients feel like a million bucks?

4. Can I Keep My Cool Around High Profile Clients?

Okay… this is a big one!  As you advance in your career in beauty, you might start to work with high profile clients like CEO’s and celebrities.  It may be tempting to grill them for gossip, learn new skills, and more. Yet they – like your other clients – are also there seeking a little, stress-free break.  When they walk in the door, will you be able to maintain your level of professionalism?

5. Is the School You Plan On Attending Nationally Accredited?

Finding an accredited school is crucial because it means that your school is recognized as meeting the national standards, you’ll learn all of the best techniques, and you will also have the option of applying for financial aid.  It also looks great to employers.
