Cosmetology Training: What You Should Know About Admission Requirements

If your dream is to become a cosmetologist, then obviously you will need to familiarize yourself with the various cosmetology training requirements. In the simplest definition, cosmetology is the art and science of making people look beautiful. This can be done in a number of ways including improving their skin, hair and nails. So back to the topic, what requirements does one need to meet in order to train as a cosmetologist?

Minimum Age Requirements

Age is a pretty important factor when it comes to training as a cosmetologist. In most cases, students will be required to be no less than 16 years old. The general assumption is that anyone below this age will probably still be in high school and, therefore, not able to dedicate the amount of time required for the course. On the other hand, there is no such a thing as being too old for cosmetology school; even if you are a grandmother you can still train to become a beautician.

Education Requirements

If you want to join a cosmetology school, you will need to complete high school education and get your diploma. There are, however, cases where students are accorded the opportunity to start training a bit earlier i.e. while still in high school. The aim here is to give the students an idea of what the profession is all about. This is, however, not full training, and so if one is interested in becoming a fully qualified cosmetologist; they will have to go for more classes after high school.

Course Contents

Cosmetology training does not just involve using your hands to improve the appearance of clients; i.e. it is not all practical; there is quite a significant amount of theory, as well. One of the most important things students will learn in a theory class is what goes into making the various beauty products in the market today. They will also learn about the different laws that govern the practice of cosmetology, as well as ethics and safety matters. In practical classes students will be taught different cosmetology techniques and skills including cutting hair and how to handle the various instruments used in the trade.

Licensing

In order to start practicing as a beautician, you have to get a license and the only way this can be achieved is by sitting for an exam and passing it. The cosmetology exam is designed to test both your practical and theoretical skills. Once you get your license, it doesn’t mean that you are set for life; you will be required to renew it every now and then. The shortest validity period for a cosmetology license is 1 year. Basically, these are the most noteworthy cosmetology training requirements.
