You’re never too old to add cosmetology graduate to your resume. Just ask 90-year-old Cassie Hobby, who recently graduated from a cosmetology program in Tennessee. Cassie didn’t let her age stop her from pursuing her goal of becoming a nail art technician. She attended the Sweetwater Institute of Cosmetology and graduated in early April of 2015, despite a broken hip and the use of an oxygen tank and a walker.
Fay Jago, Hobby’s daughter told MyFoxAtlanta.com that “No, she can’t walk that far or stand, but she can sit and do nails. So there’s always something enjoyable someone can do.” Cassie’s next goal is to open up a spa with Jago in their hometown.
How Long Does It Take
On average, a nail tech program like the one Cassie attended requires around 400 hours of training to complete. The exact number of hours required varies depending on state requirements. Because of this, the actual length of the program varies as well. The average program length is between 3 and 12 months.
Skills Required
Customer service and listening skills are essential to a good nail technician. It’s important to be friendly and comfortable working with people. It also helps to have a passion for the beauty industry. As far as physical qualities are concerned, it’s helpful to have a steady hand, good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Employment Outlook for the Cosmetology Graduate
In a 2013 to 2014 industry statistics report by Nails Magazine, it was determined that the money spent on salon services has grown by 12% during that time. They also estimated that around 43% of nail technicians have worked in the industry for over 12 years.
Employment opportunities in the beauty industry are expected to continue to grow in the future. Most cosmetology graduates end up working in salons or spas after school, while some choose to continue their training and move into fields like massage therapy or skin care.
