Avenue Five is immensely proud to partner with MUD Make-Up Designory and be able to offer a unique, comprehensive 15-week Make-up Program. What’s equally as exciting, is that our newest team member, Joanna Ruley-Garza, just recently introduced the ways of MUD to the first group of AveFive’s talented young minds.
We think it’s very fitting of a match, Joanna and our new MUD Level II 210-Hour Make-up Program, because similar to Joanna’s beliefs, this esteemed company also believes in creating an honest product and providing a quality education.
Joanna, a super proud New Yorker, comes to us with years of experience. She received her Esthetician license and continued her career as a Platform MUA, MUA Instructor, MUA Director and developer of education programs, an Esthetician and at one point, a spa owner. Not only has she rocked celebrity red carpet events, and worked on TV, Film and Theatre sets, she’s also had the opportunity to do runway, editorial and special FX makeup. What’s even cooler? She was previously a fashion designer with experience in fashion show creative direction, production, photo shoot coordination, and backstage MUA, hairstylist, model and stylist recruitment and management.
Among her vast experience in the field, she’s also a passionate educator. She’s led certificate training for large groups and overseen recruitment, training and mentoring of MUA teams. She knows what it takes to guide students towards greatness and we’re excited to welcome someone with her spirit and fervor.
Needless to say, Joanna is fitting right in with our rock star team and it made so much sense that she be in the spotlight next.
Q/ Where did you grow up?
A/ New Orleans & NYC.
Q/ If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
A/ Marrakesh, Morocco.
Q/ What motivates you to work hard?
A/ My family.
Q/ What is your favorite thing about your career?
A/ Creative license, constant movement and unlimited growth potential.
Q/ What is your proudest accomplishment?
A/ Successfully raising 3 kids while being a business entrepreneur.
Q/ What is your personal soundtrack at the moment?
A/ Anything from Angus and Julia Stone.
Q/ What makes you laugh the most?
A/ I laugh until I cry when I get together with my family of 5 sisters and 1 brother and we reminiscence about our childhood adventures.
Q/ What did you want to be when you were a kid?
A/ A fashion designer and I was one earlier in my career.
Q/ What would you sing at Karaoke night?
A/ Katy Perry’s “Firework”. The lyrics are very uplifting.
Q/ If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A/ I am a vegetarian and love spicy, exotic food. Possibly Chana Masala(chickpeas in Masala sauce) which is an Eastern Indian specialty.
Q/ If you were a super-hero, what powers would you have?
A/ The power to clone myself.
Q/ Who was your favorite teacher in school and why?
A/ My college fashion design professor for his encouragement and honest feedback.
Q/ What’s a solid piece of advice you often give your students?
A/ Work hard, strive further, think outside the box and never settle for mediocrity.
