You’ve got the training, now its time to get the job! Maybe you are just looking to enter the cosmetology field. Or you are considering looking for a different company to work with. In any case, here are some creative tips you should consider when formulating your cosmetology resume.
Research, Research, Research!
Many resume crafters fail to do this one powerful step that could literally make or break their resume. They fail to study their audience. In other words, they do not do the research necessary to gain an understanding of their potential employer.
Here are some action items to take to know the company you are lobbying:
1. Website – Study the companies website design, look at their pictures, listen to how they present themselves
2. Blog – Read as many of their entries as you can in order to capture the “voice” of the company
3. Social Media – Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest accounts? Study them as well
Once you are armed with knowledge of the company, in your resume, naturally speak with the voice that you know they use and are looking for. Use keywords and buzzwords that you find they are fond of. Your cosmetology resume should communicate using their language.
Layout and Design
The layout and design of your cosmetology resume should be intuitive. You want the overall visual appeal and feel of the resume to do so as well. Not only will this allow your resume to stand out in the crowd, it will stand out in a meaningful way.
No matter what layout and design you use, all of your vital information should be prominent and clear. Maintain the voice and vision of the company. If they are fun and funky, run with that theme but avoid fun and funky if they are clean and business-like. Here are some creative cosmetology resume design ideas:
Fancy Font – Just don’t go over board! A little goes a long way. Make sure that all font is clearly readable.
Pictures – Maybe some of your best creative work needs more than a thousand words. Add a picture.
Logo – If you have your own logo put it at the bottom or top of your resume.
Chart – Need to show some numbers that communicate your productivity? Chart them.
CAUTION – DO NOT go overboard with the design layout even though aesthetics is your profession. Keep it classy. The last thing you want is the resume reviewer mistakeing it for a piece of advertisement that got mixed in with the resumes.
