At age 25, Cara made the decision to go back to cosmetology school. She has never looked back and, in fact, is slated to graduate soon.

The Early Years of Beauty School for Single Moms

Shortly after breaking up with her young daughter’s father, Cara moved back home and enrolled in beauty college. She’s the first to admit that she was struggling with low self-confidence, at the time. But, she persevered and got her license one year later. Cara started doing hair, in addition to working a second job.

At that point, she was still getting some financial help from her family. Cara says, “at times I felt totally helpless, believing that where I was in my life was where I’d always be.”

Going Back to School

Cara’s re-entry into college started at the local community college, the same year her daughter started kindergarten. She now attends the University of California at Davis, where she’s studying to be an art teacher. Taking advantage of as many grants and scholarships as she can, Cara still relies on her cosmetology skills to help pay the bills.

Want to follow in Cara’s Footsteps?

There really is no better time to follow in Cara’s footsteps. Jobs in the beauty industry are plentiful. Even better, annual job growth is expected through the year 2020. According to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 128,000 new jobs are expected to be created up until then. It breaks down like this:

  • barbers –  4,500
  • cosmetologists – 98,400
  • estheticians (skin care specialists) – 11,700
  • manicurists – 13,600

This doesn’t even take into account the jobs which will open up due to retirement and individuals who decide to make career changes.

Many schools offer part-time hours, making it easier for single moms to work school into their busy schedules. Keep in mind, choosing this option adds a few months of classroom time to your program. But, you’ll be working in the industry much sooner than if you pursue a traditional degree. In addition, some campuses offer childcare services with fees that are typically lower than off-campus childcare facilities.

One of the biggest perks, in regard to studying to be a cosmetologist, is that you have the opportunity to open your own shop. There are many benefits to working for yourself. Of course, you may not want to do this right away. But, it’s certainly something to look forward to, isn’t it?
