The Truth about Beauty College: 5 Myths That Need to Go Away

Beauty-College

Never believe everything you hear about beauty college. Myths lurk everywhere! Don’t let erroneous information keep you from embarking on your dream career. Read further to clear up some of the issues that really aren’t issues at all.

Myth #1:  Beauty Skills are a Prerequisite

Beauty skills are not a prerequisite for beauty college. All that’s necessary is creativity and the desire to work in the industry. Of course, if you love keeping up on all of the current trends and have an affinity for the latest beauty products, all the better. Remember, the whole point of beauty college is to learn the skills necessary to be successful in your field.

Myth #2:  It’s Just for Women

Careers in beauty aren’t just for women anymore. Many male makeup artists and hairstylists enjoy phenomenal success. Unfortunately, stereotypes such as this one will persist until more men are visible in the beauty industry.

Myth #3:  It’s Just for the Young

Beauty colleges readily accept students of all ages. Recent statistics indicate that this is a growing field for mature adults and those looking for a second career. Older individuals are just as successful in this field as young people. In some situations, an older stylist might actually have an advantage. Why? Some clients may not be comfortable making an appointment with someone whom they consider to be seemingly young.

Myth #4:  You Don’t Need It to Work in the Industry

Years ago, it was typically easier to find work in the beauty industry without a formal beauty education. That is not the case today. Without an education, and with all of the competition, the only beauty job you might be lucky enough to currently land is an entry level one.

Myth #5:  It’s Expensive

Everyone is dealing with a unique financial situation. What’s expensive to one person, may not be considered expensive to another. Beauty college is much less expensive than a four-year degree. Many accredited colleges offer some type of financial aid or scholarship opportunities. In lieu of that, they may offer work-study programs or payment plans. Beauty schools are in business to help you succeed. Rest assured, the financial aid department staff will do everything they can to assist you.

Why Enrolling in a Beauty College is the Right Choice

As you can see, all of these myths distract aspiring cosmetologists, estheticians, massage therapists and make-up artists from pursuing their dreams, and misinformation shouldn’t stop you from enrolling in a beauty college of your choice.
