What Inspired Niki to Become a Massage Therapist?

Niki has always had an interest in movement and dance, which she says made it easy to transition to massage therapy. Along side her husband, she taught circus skills to local kids. This was another inspiration. Last but not least, she has two siblings who are both massage therapists, which she suggests probably has something to do with it.

What Training Did She Take?

As required by the state of New York, Niki attended 1,000 hours at a state-approved school. She was also required to pass a board exam.

What Does Niki Enjoy Most About Her Job?

For Swarthout, the best part of the job is helping people who’ve sustained injuries. Her favorite task is figuring out what is causing her clients pain and bringing them relief. However, she says the most rewarding work she does is at her nursing facility. Many of the people there have never received a massage and Niki loves giving them a new experience that makes them feel so much better.

What Does She Feel is the Most Difficult Part of Her Work?

According to Niki, the hardest part of her job is working around wheelchairs and other devices to bring her clients comfort. She also states that massage therapy is no desk job and can be physically demanding.

What Advice Does She Give to Aspiring Students?

For those interested in the field of massage therapy, Niki recommends going to a state-approved school.

Niki teaches a two-year massage therapy program at Columbia Greene Community College. She has taught many hands-on courses there.

Is She Satisfied With the Money She Makes

Niki says she is comfortable, but not rich. She has made enough not only to support herself, but also to support two children.
