5 Secrets I Learned At Beauty School

beauty schoolIn beauty school you can expect to graduate with a basic well rounded knowledge in all concepts of hair, skin, and nails. There are a few subjects you will learn, like:

– Anatomy
– Physiology
– Diseases of the hair
– Skin, and nails

Most importantly the services you will be providing like haircutting, coloring, nails, and facials.

Here are a few secrets I picked up in beauty school:

The Art of Reading Body Language

Every stylist can do it. You will find yourself knowing when a client needs an ear or even a hug, feels like being quiet, Or is perhaps blissfully happy. These are queues to you throughout their visit to make sure they love the experience.

You will get a sense of whether or not your client is being over or under sold. If you start a conversation about product and they clam up, you will likely know they aren’t interested. The alternative is they keep asking questions, this is them saying “sell me something.”

Business Skills

You will learn how to manage, or even open your own business. Part of the business skills are promoting yourself. One of the better things I learned was to simply invite the client back to see you. Many people just aren’t sure of the appropriate action to take if they really liked their stylist. They think it may hurt another stylists feelings if they would prefer a certain person.

Invite them to see you again by saying something like “I enjoyed our time together, Come see me again in ___ weeks for a touch up, we accept request, here is my card”

Educational Initiative

Learn everything you can in order to be the best stylist you can be. If you see another stylist who is great at something, watch her and ask her questions. Attend as many hair shows as you can, and once your in the job market it is crucial to work with a company that will grow your knowledge.

Our industry skills change at the drop of a hat, plus hair shows are a blast!

Communication Skills

Communication skills will get you far in life and it will help you get that coveted job and it will help you retain clients. Beauty school will not only teach you how to communicate, you will be an expert at it. You will learn how to ask leading questions when your client seems to be on the fence about what they want, you will learn what to talk about, and when to talk about it.

Salesmanship

Learning how to sell is about more than selling a product. It is about promoting yourself, promoting your business, and learning how to upsell. Don’t get me wrong selling products is important, we need our clients to take care of their hair at home for optimum results. Many clients feel undersold, they want you to educate them, and if they need highlights to make that new haircut work, they want to know.
