A Day in the Life of a Nail Artist

nail tech school

Nail artists, also known as nail technicians, perform a variety of duties in an effort to improve the look and feel of fingernails and toenails. From manicures and pedicures to fake nails and nail art, nail artists always seek to leave their customers feeling great about their fingers and toes.

Nail Artist Duties

The daily routine of a nail artist focuses strictly on providing the best possible nail care for their clients.

Those who travel to see their clients begin their day by double checking that their kit is prepped while those who work at a salon begin the day by checking their equipment and supplies.

Throughout the day, nail artists welcome or visit their clients, consulting with them to discover what they need done to their fingers and toes. Manicures involve cleaning cuticles, cutting, buffing and applying other treatments to fingernails while pedicures involve the same work performed on the feet.

After the fingers and toes are all cleaned up, depending on the client, nail artists apply various finishes to nails in order to make them look even more beautiful. Some customers will want elaborate designs involving multiple colors, layers and textures, while others will simply want a solid color or french tips.

A significant part of your job as a nail artist is maintaining the cleanliness of your practice. Tools that have not been sterilized and materials left lying around may result in the inadvertent transmission of a serious disease such as hepatitis.

As a nail artist, you also need to take care of business related duties, such as bookkeeping, marketing and other financial duties.

Nail Technician Education Requirements

A variety of aesthetics schools provide in-depth training to become a nail technician or a nail artist. Courses teach aspiring nail artists about a variety of treatments and nail technology. Many institutes also teach customer service and marketing basics in order to help aspiring nail artist deal with the business side of the industry.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for this type of work will increase by about 16% between 2012 and 2022, which is much higher than the demand for all occupations , which are slated to rise by 11% during the same period of time.
