How Cosmetology School Graduates Can Network Using Social Media

A job search is one of the most difficult things a cosmetology graduate will go through.  Unlike other industries, jobs in the beauty field are hard to come by.  When a vacancy does appear, graduates will face fierce competition.  Thankfully, there is a way that graduates can get an edge on their competitors – social media.

Why is Social Media So Important for Cosmetology School Graduates?

Every successful beauty professional knows the value of word of mouth advertising.  As there are very few experienced and qualified beauty professionals out there, employers tend to hire people they know.  This is much easier than seeking out applicants and placing advertisements.  In fact, many employers do not advertise beauty jobs at all!  Instead, they hire people who have already contacted them in person or through social media.  Industry insiders also hire established beauticians who they know through their own contacts.

In the past, making contacts required a lot of grunt work.  Newbies to the industry had to pound the pavement and leave their resume at salons.  The more ambitious job seekers attended industry events in order to meet people.

How Social Media Can Help Cosmetology School Graduates

With the advance of technology, contacting people is now easier than ever before.  All job seekers need to do is log on to the internet and start seeking out job opportunities.  Listed below are some ways that graduates can find work online.

  • Create a website that showcase’s the job seeker’s work.  Webmasters can then use social media to promote their website.  If they are lucky, an employer may see it and contact them.
  • Start an online group on a popular social media website.  This group can store photos of the graduate’s work.  Like with regular websites, employers may use this group to assess a potential worker’s capabilities.
  • Find beauty companies on social media and become active on their page.  For example, a make-up artist could post pictures of their work using products by a specific brand.  The brand could potentially hire the make-up artist to work at one of their make-up counters.
  • Getting involved in beauty communities that aren’t about job seeking.  Many industry professionals join social media communities to keep up with the latest beauty trends.

There are a few different benefits graduates can gain from using social media.  Firstly, they will make contacts that may hire them for future projects.  Job seekers will also be aware of jobs that are not advertised in print or on job websites.  Finally, social activity will lead to increased visibility within the industry.  If all goes well, cosmetology school graduates will become well-known in their field.
