The right model can make or break a look, or a make-up student’s portfolio. This is true for your makeup portfolio as much as it is for other forms of modelling. Keeping these tips in mind will help you present your work in the best possible light:
Make sure your model has good skin
You need a clear, smooth canvas to work with, unless you’re specifically working on shots that demonstrate your cover-up skills (and even then, you probably don’t want to have to work too hard). One of the most important pieces of advice given to makeup models (and models in general) is to take care of their skin, so it’s reasonable to expect models to do so. Especially if you are using an amateur model, it’s best to see the face you’ll be working with sans makeup ahead of time. They may be good at covering things up too!
Check whether your model has any potential product allergies
You could waste hours of your time, if they turn out to be allergic to the makeup you are using or are generally sensitive to makeup. Again, this is likely to be more of an issue if using someone who only does modelling on the side or is doing it as a favour to you, but it’s important!
Make sure your model has the kind of features you’re looking for
Proportionate features that look good both from the front and in profile make for better photos. This isn’t to say that you can’t pick models with interesting features; you just need to keep in mind how well your model’s face will translate onto film.
Ensure that your model is comfortable in front of the camera
All the preparation in the world can be for nothing if your model gets very nervous when being photographed. A makeup model will be scrutinized closely both during the prep period and during the shoot, so confidence (and good posing) are crucial.
If you remember to look for these key qualities when selecting a model, you’ll be on the right track to a great portfolio. If you’re looking for more training, Avenue Five can work with you to cultivate the skills you need to be successful.
